An explosion, suspected to be a gas explosion, has rocked a mall in Port Harcourt City of Rivers State, recording five casualties.

The mall affected is the SPAR Mall in the capital city.

According to a staff of the mall, the explosion happened around 3:30pm on the first floor of the two-storey building housing the mall.

Goods worth of billions of naira were destroyed in the explosion as staff of the mall, made efforts to extinguish the fire before the arrival of fire services.

Confirming the accident, Rivers State Police spokesperson, Nnamdi Omoni said the injured are receiving treatment at the Rivers government-owned hospital.

“They have been admitted at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) receiving treatments.”
